Hörerinnen, liebe Hörer
Das
Übersetzen von englischen Texten und englischen Sprichwörtern
bringt mich oft in Schwierigkeit. Das Problem steht darin, dass es
keinen geeigneten deutschen Ausdruck gibt den Sinn der englischen
Aussage auszudrucken. In solchen Situationen hilft ein
Telefongespräch mit meinem Kollegen Gerhard Klußmeier von Swinging
Hamburg. Und wenn er nicht mehr weiter weiss nur noch „wikipedia“.
Diese
Recherchen bringen oft noch ganz andere Deutungen zum Vorschein. So
habe ich herausgefunden, dass die weltbekannte Ansage von Glenn
Miller „Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Blue“
nur ein Teil eines alten englischen Sprichwortes ist. Dieses enthält
nämlich noch die Zeile „and a sixpence in yourshoe“ was einen
ganz anderen Sinn ergibt:
„Etwas
Altes, etwas Neues, etwas Entlehntes und etwas Melancholisches
und
ein Geldstück im Schuh!
Damit
sind Glücksbringer gemeint, die eine Braut am Hochzeitstag tragen
sollte!
„Puttin‘
on the Ritz“
ist
ein weiterer Titel und Beispiel an dem ich mir sein vielen Jahren
den Kopf zerbrochen habe. Der Sinn ist, sich so zu geben wie man im
vornehmen Hotel „Ritz“ auftreten würde. Übersetzer für die
Synchronisation der Texte des Films „Blue Heaven“ mit Fred Astair
(1945) haben den „Puttin‘ On The Ritz“ schliesslich mit „Wirf
Dich in Schale“ übersetzt!
Man
lernt nie aus!

The
translation of English texts and English proverbs are often connected
with difficulties. The problem being, that no German
expression/sis/are known with the same meaning. The only help in such
situations is a telephone call to my good friend Gerhard Klußmeierof
Swinging Hamburg. And if he cannot help, there’s always
“Wikipedia”.
Researching
one thing or another often results in surprises. For instance; Glenn
Miller’s introduction to his famous musicalmedleys
„Something
old, something new, something borrowed and something blue
had
its origins in an old English proverb which included one more line
„Something
old, something new, something borrowed, something blue
and
a sixpence in your shoe“
and
referred to good luck charms a bride should wear on her wedding day!
„Puttin‘
on the Ritz“
Is
one of many titles for which a verbatim translation makes little or
no sense at all. The essence “to behave like the rich folks who
frequent the famous Ritz Hotel” was translated for the film “My
Blue Heaven” with Fred Astaire in 1945 in an equally hard to
understand title “Wirf Dich in Schale” (Throw yourself in a
shell!), the meaning of which is “Put on you tuxedo”.
If
all of this is Greek to you … stop pondering and enjoy the show!
